Caring for your Saltwater Fish Tank

Learning to care for your saltwater fish tank will be one of the best investments you can make for the health of your fish and coral. Without proper maintenance, your aquarium can experience frustrating algae blooms as a result of high phosphates and high nitrates. You’ll also need to maintain the water parameters to allow for the growth of your corals.

Cleaning Your Saltwater Fish Tank

You’ll need to perform regular water changes to help remove nutrients and restore elements such as calcium and magnesium. As a rule of thumb, change 15%-20% of your water every two weeks. Use a gravel washer and siphon kit to remove any debris from the sand. This can be found at our saltwater aquarium shop in Clearfield, UT. It is also a good idea to invest in cleaning equipment to maintain your water between cleanings such as protein skimmers, filter sponges or socks, and UV sterilizers.

Supplemental Dosing

As your aquarium becomes established, especially in highly stocked aquariums, you’ll likely need to supplement your water with nutrients. The most common nutrients to dose are alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium. These are all essential for beneficial algae such as coralline and to the growth of your corals, especially stony corals. You’ll need to invest in a test kit to monitor your water parameters and to find the right dosing amounts.

Proper Maintenance is Key to Enjoyable Reef Keeping

By keeping up with the ongoing maintenance and cleaning of your saltwater fish tank, you’ll be able to enjoy a healthy aquarium. If you are unable to invest the time, find a saltwater maintenance company like Aquatic Dreams to care for the tank for you. We will create a customized saltwater maintenance schedule to meet your needs.

Visit our aquarium shop in Clearfield, UT for more information or call us at  (801) 525-0033 to schedule maintenance for your home or office saltwater tank.
