Six Tropical Fish for Your Saltwater Aquarium
November 14, 2019 by admin in Saltwater Fish Store

The Tropical Fish You Need

Saltwater aquariums allow fish keepers to create a variety of environments: single species tank, a fish-only community tank, and a coral reef system. Knowing which species will do well in each environment is critical to the well-being of your underwater world. Unfortunately, the one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t apply to tropical fish. The team at Aquatic Dreams in Clearfield, has recommendations for six tropical fish for your saltwater tank.

Damselfish

These lively tropical fish need lots of space to themselves. It is suggested they’re kept in a single species tank. However, they get along well with other fish and can live in many water conditions. In addition, they aren’t picky about food too.

Recommended species: Talbot’s damselfish (Chrysiptera talboti)

Cardinalfish

Although tropical fish, Cardinalfish do well in all three aquatic settings. However, it is important to note that they look sluggish in tanks with bright lighting. As mouth-breeders, cardinal males keep their eggs in their mouths and it’s not uncommon for them to eat the eggs—something to keep in mind if you’re interested in breeding. These guys will thrive in fish-only tanks.

Recommended species: Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni)

Clownfish

The easy-going clownfish species comes in a wide variety of vibrant colors. Clownfish are great for coral reef systems because of the way with can live in harmony with other fish.

Recommended species: Clark’s clownfish (Amphiprion clarkii)

Goby

These tiny fish love to hide in dark spots of the tank and get easily scared by other fish. Although not terribly social, they’re known for being able to live in communion with brine shrimp and other smaller fish. This is why they do well in coral reef systems.

Recommended species: Yellow Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus)

Dartfish

Dartfish are attractive additions to a saltwater aquarium because of their fluorescent appearance. But, like Damsels, they are aggressive with other fish, especially other Dartfish. Therefore, not recommended for single species tanks. We recommend a tank bigger than 30-gallon if you want more than one Dartfish.

Recommended species: Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica)

Hawkfish

Carnivorous Hawkfish like to hang out in the upper levels of the tank. They like to observe whatever is below them, hence, the name. Though hawkfish like to be alone, they’re not aggressive toward other fish. They’re great for fish-only community tanks. However, they enjoy scaring fish who are get easily scared.

Recommended species: Falco hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys falco).
